About Saundersfoot Wombles - The Village Green Team

The Saundersfoot Wombles are a community volunteer group -- "The Village Green Team" -- dedicated to beach cleaning, litter picking, gardening, and village improvement in the beautiful coastal village of Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Led by Julie (@glittersocks16), we're a friendly bunch who believe in making a real difference to our local environment.

How It All Started

It all began around 2015-2016 with individuals just doing their own thing - bumping into each other on the beach and chatting about what you'd found or what you'd seen. The inspiration came from two wonderful initiatives:

  • Two Minute Beach Clean - A registered charity with the simple idea that everybody has two minutes. You don't need an organised team; just two minutes on your way to work to pick up litter.
  • Take Three for the Sea - An Australian charity encouraging people to see three things on the beach that shouldn't be there, put them in the bin, and that's as easy as it is.

Those of us who were doing this kind of thing got to talk a bit more to each other, and eventually we turned into the Wombles! We're officially registered with Keep Wales Tidy, who own the Wombles trademark. They've given us high-vis jackets with "Wombles" on the back and provide advice when we need it.

Community & Upcycling

A key part of our group is Sam, who runs a local shop focused on creative recycling. When we find items like inflatable rings, dolphins, or turtles that people leave behind after beach visits, Sam finds ways to turn them into bags and other useful items. We're always looking for innovative ways to upcycle what we find - from turning buckets and spades into flowerpots to finding new purposes for the various beach finds.

Growing Community Involvement

When you carry cleanup equipment along the beach in a really obvious way, other people notice. They start thinking "oh I can do that, I can do that too." That's really how enthusiasm for keeping our village clean is growing - it's infectious! People see someone picking up rope or carrying a traffic cone (yes, sometimes on your head when you run out of hands!), and it inspires them to join in.

We even had a logo competition with local children from the school, and together with the Community Council, we created our current logo - a beautiful hand-drawn design that captures the spirit of our community effort.

"Always thinking of ways to recycle, upcycle and make good use of the things that we find."

What We Do

We organise and take part in a wide range of community activities:

  • Beach cleaning along Saundersfoot's stunning coastline -- supporting #2minutebeachclean and #take3forthesea
  • Litter picking through the village streets, harbour, and public spaces
  • Gardening and planting -- including our entry in the RHS Wales in Bloom 2026 competition
  • Upcycling and recycling -- making good use of the things we find
  • Beach HeARTs '26 -- our creative community art project
  • Village improvement and coastal conservation

Equipment

Litter picking equipment is available for free from the Ecoast shop on the High Street in Saundersfoot -- a Keep Wales Tidy hub. Just pop in and grab what you need, whether you're joining an organised clean or heading out on your own.

Everyone Is Welcome

All our activities are open to everyone, completely free. Families are especially welcome -- it's a brilliant way for children to learn about caring for the environment. No membership or fees, just turn up and get stuck in!

Current Projects

We're currently working on Beach HeARTs '26, a creative project combining beach cleaning with community art, and preparing for Wales in Bloom 2026, the prestigious RHS competition. We're always thinking of new ways to improve our village!
